現在、保健省の抗菌薬耐性・医療関連感染（Antimicrobial Resistance and Healthcare Associated Infection；ARHAI）諮問委員会、病院感染学会（Hospital Infection Society；HIS）、保健省（英国）、および健康保護局の代表者からなる作業部会が結成されている。殺芽胞性消毒薬 ARHAI/HIS 作業部会の目的はクロストリジウム・ディフィシル（Clostridium difficile）芽胞に対する有効性を標榜している消毒薬の適正な検査基準を策定すること、消毒薬の殺芽胞効果の in vitro 検査に対応できる検査機関のネットワークを構築すること、および消毒薬の殺芽胞効果の in vitro 検査実施機関のための全国的な質評価スキームの策定を模索することである。

抗菌療法関連下痢症の起因菌として臨床的に最も重要なクロストリジウム・ディフィシル（C. difficile）は、偏性嫌気性菌でありながら、芽胞を産生することから環境を介して水平伝播することとなり、病院感染制御の観点からは最も対応が難しい病原体の 1 つである。一方、これまでの殺芽胞性消毒薬に関するヨーロッパ規格（EN 13704）は、枯草菌（Bacillus subtilis）に対する活性が評価の対象となっており、主として食品衛生のための基準であった。新たに C. diffcile に照準を合わせた基準が 12 ～ 24 か月を目途に策定されようとしている。
