重症急性呼吸器症候群コロナウイルス-2 （SARS-CoV-2）のパンデミックが進行するにつれ、換気が感染制御の重要な手段としてますます認識されるようになった。アイルランドや UK の多くの病院では機械換気を使用せず、自然換気に頼っている。大気条件や建築設計により自然換気の有効性は変化する。本研究では、従来の設計による病棟の負荷試験において、移動式空気ろ過装置は、自然換気と比較して、気道に吸入される大きさの汚染エアロゾルの除去を有意に高め、空間における粒子残存の変動を低減させた。自然換気と移動式空気ろ過装置の併用は、いずれかの単独介入よりも、粒子の除去が有意に効果的である。
監訳者コメント：
新型コロナウイルス感染症の感染経路としてエアロゾルを介する経路が指摘され、換気の重要性が強調されている。自然換気は、天候に左右され、風向、風量や風速が一定しないため確実な換気ができない可能性がある。すなわち自然換気だけでは十分な汚染エアロゾルの除去が不十分であり、HEPA フィルター付ポータブル空気清浄機と併用することで確実で効率的な汚染物質の除去が可能となる。英国では換気回数 6 回／時間が一般病棟で必要とされている。
