医療提供における最良の実践により命を救う必要性が切迫していることを強調するために、2021 年 5 月 5 日の世界的な手指衛生の日のスローガンは、「手指衛生―わずかな時間が命を救う」とされた。WHO のキャンペーンは、主要な利害関係者、すなわち医療従事者、感染予防・制御（IPC）の従事者、患者および家族、施設管理者、政策立案者、ワクチン接種担当者、一般市民（ポイント・オブ・ケアでの最適な手指衛生実施に重要な役割を担う人々）に行動を啓発し、社会関与を高めるよう促している。
監訳者コメント：
Pittet らの推進する WHO の手指衛生プロモーションの 2021 年版は、医療従事者は今まで以上に、それ以外にも患者家族やワクチン接種に関わる人々、一般の人々まで裾野を広げて展開している。
