British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) / Healthcare Infection Society (HIS) が推奨した糞便細菌叢移植（FMT）に関する初版ガイドラインは 2018 年に発表された。過去 5 年間にエビデンス基盤がかなり強化され（大規模な国内 FMT 登録によるアウトカムの発表を含む）、最新の批評的文献の総説ならびに BSG/HIS による FMT ガイドライン第 2 版が必要とされている。これらは、英国国立医療技術評価機構（National Institute for Health and Care Excellence）により認可された方法に基づき作成された。したがって、英国を拠点とする臨床医に特に関連するものであるが、国際的にも適用されることを意図している。ガイドライン第 2 版では、推奨事項、優れた取り組みのポイント、種々の実践に対する推奨事項に分けた。クロストリジオイデス・ディフィシル（Clostridioides difficile）感染症（CDI）に対する FMT に関して、主軸とする重要な領域は、投与のタイミング、カプセル化された FMT 製剤の臨床経験を増やすこと、ドナースクリーニングの最適化である。COVID-19 パンデミック、および FMT 関連の病原菌伝播に起因する罹病および死亡例を考えると、ドナースクリーニングの課題は特に重要な事項である。ガイドラインでは、CDI 以外の病態（消化器系および非消化器系の適応症を含む）における FMT 使用に関する新たな文献も考慮し、関連する無作為化対照試験をレビューした。特定の領域（未承認 FMT 特別使用を含む）に関する推奨事項、ならびにFMT および微生物叢治療法の進化しつつある展望に関する考察を提示する。
