英国の急性期トラストにおいて 2020 年から 2021 年に、コロナウイルス感染症（COVID-19）症例および関連する入院の増加が報告された時期と一致して、病院発症型および集中治療室発症型黄色ブドウ球菌（Staphylococcus aureus）性菌血症の発生率の大幅な上昇が認められた。これらの黄色ブドウ球菌性菌血症症例の多くは、COVID-19 の同時感染／二次感染と定義された。同期間に、人工呼吸器関連肺炎に伴う菌血症の割合の増加も認められた。COVID-19 パンデミックが、英国における病院発症型黄色ブドウ球菌性菌血症の増加に寄与したと考えられる。患者転帰への影響をよりよく理解するためには、さらなる研究が必要である。
