本研究の目的は、メチシリン耐性黄色ブドウ球菌（Staphylococcus aureus）（MRSA）保菌状態に関する個人の経験および理解を調査することである。13名に面談を行い、内容分析法で解析した結果、「侵害（invaded）、不安（insecure）、および孤独（alone）」という主題が浮かび上がった。参加者らは、日常生活の中で恐怖や制限を経験し、それとともに他者を感染から守る必要性を表明した。さらに、彼らは医療従事者によって対応や情報が異なると感じ、満足している者もいれば満足していない者もいた。報告されている恐怖、制限、および不十分な患者-医療従事者の関係が、MRSA保菌者に受け入れがたい苦痛をもたらしていた。したがって、医療部門はMRSA管理について責任を負うべきであり、医療従事者はMRSA保菌者のニーズに適切に応えるために、専門性および情報提供能力を向上させる必要がある。
