新型コロナウイルス感染症（COVID-19）のパンデミックにより、世界中で多大な混乱が生じている。さらなる蔓延を阻止するために、重症急性呼吸器症候群コロナウイルス-2（SARS-CoV-2）の伝播機序の解明が重要であるが、伝播が議論される時は必ず「空中浮遊」の意味をめぐり混乱をきたす。相反する科学的見解は、何年も前に発表されたエビデンスに由来しており、最新の考えを覆い隠す定説信仰を生んだ。本稿では、最新のエビデンスに照らして科学の修正を促すために、もっとも多く支持される空気伝播の定説のいくつかを列挙し、検討する。類似ウイルスに関して最近発表された論文および先行研究の専門家の見解に基づき、6 つの「定説」を示し、説明して、最終的に反証する。通常のあらゆる換気パラメータや人の行動の影響を受けやすいさまざまな大きさの空中浮遊粒子を介して、SARS-CoV-2 が伝播することに疑いの余地はほとんどない。空気伝播機序のエビデンスを強化し、医療および地域社会における最新の COVID-19 予防・制御策の正当性を示すために、エアロゾル研究、換気、工学、物理学、ウイルス学、臨床医学にわたる特殊な分野の専門家が協働し、今回のレビューの作成にあたった。
