Potential use of copper surfaces to reduce survival of epidemic meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in the healthcare environment

メチシリン耐性黄色ブドウ球菌流行株(EMRSA)は、英国で最も流行している株であり、EMRSA-15およびEMRSA-16が1980年代の初めに出現した。患者間のMRSA伝播は、主に医療従事者の手を介して起こり、病院環境が汚染される可能性がある。本研究の目的は、ステンレススチールと比較して銅および真鍮は3種のMRSA株[MRSA(NCTC 10442)、EMRSA-1(NCTC 11939)およびEMRSA-16(NCTC 13143)]の空気で乾燥させた堆積物としての菌の生存率を減少させることに有効であるかを評価することである。MRSAおよびEMRSA[107コロニー形成単位(CFU)]を、銅、真鍮、またはステンレススチールの小片(1 cm×1 cm)に接種し、22℃または4℃で種々の時間培養した。生存度の判定には、呼吸の指標である蛍光色素5-シアノ-2,3-ジトリルテトラゾリウムによる染色のほかに、除去したCFUを再懸濁し、トリプトンソイ寒天上での平板培養により判定した。純銅の表面では、22℃で、107のMRSA、EMRSA-1、およびEMRSA-16が、それぞれ45分、60分、および90分後に完全に死滅した。対照的に、ステンレススチール(グレード304)では、22℃で、72時間後に3株すべての生菌が検出された。銅では、4℃で、6時間以内に3株すべてが完全に死滅した。この結果は、ステンレススチールと対照的に、銅はMRSA、EMRSA-1、およびEMRSA-16に対する抗菌作用を有することを示している。したがって、病院環境での作業台およびドア部品で現在行われているステンレススチールの利用は勧められない。

監訳者コメント:
銅イオンでMRSAの殺菌効果を評価した論文である。問題は、こうしたイオンに依存する環境対策は、その効果が得られるのに時間がかかることである。
