インドでは看護師は制服の上に白衣を着用する。本小規模研究では、ポリエステル繊維およびポリエステル綿混紡繊維の布片を看護師の白衣に縫い付け、1 シフト後に検体として回収し汚染を評価した。結果から、微生物の付着は繊維の種類に影響され、ポリエステル綿混紡繊維についた菌量はポリエステル繊維についた菌量より 60%多かったことが示された。繊維の特性と微生物汚染との相関を明確にするにはさらなる研究の実施が必要である。

監訳者コメント:
微生物の付着と増殖が最も少ない繊維が何かについては、まだ一致した結論が出ていない。繊維の親水性と細菌の吸着が関連しているという報告もあり、それによれば、ビスコース > 綿 > 絹 > ポリエステルの順であった。一方で、同じ材質であっても、その表面構造によって菌の付着と生存期間が異なるとも言われる。実際の臨床現場から得た検体を用いた同様の検討の結果が待たれる。
