本研究は、台湾の 1,800 床の公立病院の循環器集中治療室および内科集中治療室で実施した 2 段階の前向き介入研究である。第 1 段階では、毎朝の清掃後に ATP バイオルミネッセンス法により清掃の効果をモニタリングした。基準に到達したのは評価した 221 の環境表面のうち 43.9％のみであった。このベースラインデータを用いて、新規清掃プロトコールおよび新規教育・研修プログラムからなる介入を策定した。介入実施後の第 2 段階では、270 の環境表面のうち 88.1％が清潔であることが示された。循環器集中治療室と内科集中治療室を併せた感染症発生率は、統計学的に有意に 49.7％低下した。

監訳者コメント：
ATP バイオルミネッセンス法は、生物学的汚染度（生菌数）を簡便、迅速に測定する方法で、菌種を問わない。本研究では、新規の清掃プロトコールを導入した前後で、環境表面の汚染度の変化を調査した。元々は 1 枚の再利用可能な布で環境清掃を行っていたものを、場所・目的ごとに 3 種類のディスポ―サブルの布を使用するよう改めたところ、各環境表面の ATP 値はおよそ 10 分の 1 に低下した。低下した感染症の詳細は明らかにされていないが、興味深い結果であり、他施設での追試が待たれる。
