院内レジオネラ症の予防には、想定される感染源を特定するための環境調査が必須である。当院の病棟の環境調査により、蒸しタオル用の加温器がレジオネラ菌に汚染されているが、水道水給水システムやシャワーヘッドにはレジオネラが認められないことが判明した。蒸しタオル用の加温器中の水がレジオネラ菌のリザーバとなっていると考えられ、著者らは当院の蒸しタオル用の加温器の使用をすべて中止した。本調査の結果に基づき、病院での蒸しタオル用の加温器の使用を忌避することが推奨される。あるいは、この器具の排水、洗浄、乾燥を毎日行うべきである。

監訳者コメント：
蒸しタオル用の加温器やミルクの加温器にはレジオネラ菌の発育に好都合な湿度と温度があり得るため、これだけではなく、同様に温水を管理する必要のあるあらゆる院内環境についても見逃さない努力が必要である。
