職員の制服を洗濯する病院は現在では少数である。職員は自宅の家庭用洗濯機を使用するよう求められるが、その洗濯機は40℃で運転するものがほとんどである。しかし、家庭での洗濯の有効性に関する情報はほとんどない。本研究では、低温（40℃）の設定を使用した場合でも、家庭用洗濯機により黄色ブドウ球菌の生菌数は108縲・012 CFUの着菌から、検出限界を下回るまで減少（106以上の減少）することが示された。環境中の微生物、主としてグラム陰性細菌叢は洗濯機から伝播するが、タンブラー乾燥機（回転式乾燥機）やアイロン掛けにより死滅した。家庭での制服の洗濯は、タンブラー乾燥機やアイロン掛けと組み合わせた場合、病院での洗濯の代替となり得る。

監訳者コメント：
自宅における洗濯機自体の衛生環境は重要な因子である。いくらエビデンスが得られたとしても、洗濯機の取り扱いが肝要である。
