病院では、シンクは細菌性病原菌のリザーバとして機能する。飛沫拡散の程度を評価するため、病院内において、以前に病原体の環境への拡散および／または患者への伝播に関与したシンク 4 台、および関与しなかったシンク 1 台に、フルオレセイン色素を添加した。P トラップまたはテールピースへの色素添加では、排水口外への蛍光飛沫は認められなかった。排水口への色素添加では、洗面台 1 台を除いて蛍光飛沫が認められ、その頻度は排水栓がない場合により高かった。シンクのデザインにおいて排水栓を設置すること、水滴落下を減らすこと、および蛇口と排水口の位置をずらすことは、排水口からの伝播を予防する助けとなるであろう。

監訳者コメント：
「シンクの蛇口と排水口の位置をずらすことで、排水口からの伝播を抑制できる」ことは簡便かつ重要なことである。シンクの商品開発にあたってはこの様な視点でデザインする必要があるし、商品を選択する上でも重要なことだろう。ぜひ、一読いただきたいペーパーである。
