末梢静脈カテーテル挿入前の皮膚消毒として 0.5％次亜塩素酸ナトリウム水溶液の有効性に関して得られたデータは少ない。患者計 239 例を対象に、0.5％次亜塩素酸ナトリウム水溶液単独 1 回塗布、または 70％エタノール 1 回塗布後に 0.5％含水次亜塩素酸ナトリウム水溶液 1 回塗布のいずれかに無作為に割り付けた。カテーテルへの細菌定着は、カテーテル先端部の培養で 1 mLあたり 1,000 cfu 超を微生物増殖と定義し、0.5％次亜塩素酸ナトリウム水溶液群では 29 例（1,000 カテーテル・日あたり細菌定着 89 件の 33％）、70％エタノール 1 回塗布後の 0.5％次亜塩素酸ナトリウム水溶液群では 31 例（1,000 カテーテル・日あたり細菌定着 126 件の 33％）で発生した。

監訳者コメント：

次亜塩素酸ナトリウム水溶液は皮膚に対する刺激が強いため、通常の皮膚消毒に使用されないが、本研究によると単回使用では皮膚症状は少なく、エタノールを使用した場合と効果は遜色ないようである。
