緒論
院内感染新型コロナウイルス感染症（COVID-19）の発生率は、昨年中に 14.3％から 4.2％ に低下したが、英国国民保健サービス（NHS）病院トラスト間で、依然としてかなり大きな差が存在する。
方法
本研究では、院内感染症の発生率を評価し、空気感染を抑制するための方策の指標である空気感染用呼吸器防護具（例、FFP3 マスク）を全スタッフに用いているNHS 病院トラストを、飛沫予防策（例、サージカルマスク）を中心に用いている NHS 病院トラストと比較した。
結果／考察
呼吸器防護具の使用により、デルタ株の流行時には院内感染のオッズが 33％低下し、アルファ株の流行時には院内感染のオッズが 21％低下した（P ＜ 0.00001）。全病院が空気感染の抑制を優先することが推奨される。
監訳者コメント：
イギリスにおいて、COVID-19 のアルファ株、デルタ株流行期に空気感染予防策を行った方が院内感染が減少したという報告。日本では標準予防策の徹底が重要視され、空気感染予防策はエアロゾル発生手技以外では強く推奨されていない。オミクロン株などのさらに感染力の強い変異株の感染対策を考える上でも重要な研究である。
