幹細胞移植レシピエントにおける呼吸器ウイルス感染症の予防は、感染症による有害な転帰のリスクが高いことから重要である。重症急性呼吸器症候群コロナウイルス-2 パンデミックの発生前に定性的研究と定量的研究を組み合わせて実施した本単一施設研究では、訪問者および医療従事者におけるマスクの普遍的な使用の方針に関する阻害因子と促進因子を探索し、同方針を導入した 1 年目における呼吸器ウイルス感染症の発生率に対する影響を、全発生率を補正して前年と比較した。同方針の実施において、マスクの普遍的な使用に関わる教育がとくに重要であることが明らかになった。同方針の導入後、呼吸器ウイルス感染症の顕著な減少が認められた。

監訳者コメント：

コロナ禍以前にはユニバーサルマスキングの有用性は確立されているとは言いがたかったが、コロナ禍においてその有用性は確立されたと言えよう。マスクの交換のタイミングなども含めて、今後、「うつらない」「うつさない」ためのマスクの使用方法について継続的な議論が必要になるだろう。
