グラム陰性細菌によるニューデリー・メタロ-β-ラクタマーゼ（bla_NDM）の獲得は、宿主範囲の分布が幅広いため、重大な懸念となっている。本研究では、腸内細菌目と緑膿菌（Pseudomonas aeruginosa）との間における bla_NDM の in-vivo での遺伝子水平伝播の可能性が認められた 2 例を検討した。いずれも、最初は PCR により可能性が示されたものであった。全ゲノムシークエンシングにより、緑膿菌と腸内細菌目において、異なる 2 つの bla_NDM バリアント（NDM-1 および NDM-5）がそれぞれ独立して獲得されたことが示された。このデータは、ショートリード・シークエンシングは、対象とする遺伝子の周囲の遺伝要素の比較により、遺伝子水平伝播の確認または否定のために必要な解決策となること、またそれにより、アウトブレイクの可能性がある場合に適時の対応が可能になることを示している。

腸内細菌目と緑膿菌との間における bla_NDM の in-vivo での遺伝子水平伝播が PCR で疑われた 2 例で、全ゲノムシークエンシングで否定されたという報告。従来の PCR と特定の耐性遺伝子の有無だけに依存することには限界がある。
