気送管システムは、物品を効率的に輸送する上で病院にとって有用な設備であるが、さらなる研究によって気送管システムにはリスクを伴う可能性があることが示された。著者らは、気送管システム内で用いられる輸送容器について、特定の注意すべき微生物、すなわちメチシリン耐性黄色ブドウ球菌（MRSA）、バンコマイシン耐性腸球菌（VRE）およびカルバペネマーゼ産生腸内細菌科細菌（CPE）を用いて汚染の程度を検討した。その結果、汚染細菌として VRE（53％）および MRSA（3％）が認められ、いずれも消毒の実施後にわずか 3％（VRE）および 0％（MRSA）にまで減少した。しかし、使用後の輸送容器にはすぐに再汚染が発生した。著者らの結果は、気送管システムが潜在的な病原体を病院全体に輸送する効率的な方法となりうることを示している。

監訳者コメント：
気送管の薬剤耐性菌汚染リスクはしばしば報告されており、ルーチンで衛生管理を行う必要性が示された。特にVREなどの汚染が多いことから、院内でVREが検出されている場合は気送管がリザーバーの一つとして考えられうる。
