国際標準では、蒸気滅菌装置には使用前に毎日、蒸気浸透試験を行うことを求めている。多くの場合、蒸気浸透試験の結果は、滅菌プロセスの改善または最適化のために用いられていない。本研究は、客観的な定量化蒸気浸透試験による傾向分析が、最終利用者に付加価値をもたらすか否かを明らかにすることを目的とした。病院および製造者による客観的な定量化蒸気浸透試験のデータベースを組み合わせて解析した。本研究で用いたデータベースには 5 種類の蒸気滅菌装置が含まれ、約 4 年間の期間を対象とした。本解析に基づき、滅菌装置のプロセスを最適化した。蒸気浸透試験の結果は、期間が長いほど安定したものとなった。これにより、メンテナンスとバリデーションの間の期間が延長する可能性がある。本解析から、客観的な定量化蒸気浸透試験により、蒸気滅菌プロセスの機能性に関するさらなる洞察と知識が得られることが示される。この知識は、プロセスを最適化し、最終利用者が費用を節減するために活用できるであろう。

国際基準（ISO11140）では蒸気滅菌装置の使用前に毎日蒸気浸透試験を行うことが求められているが、定性試験で行われている。この論文は定量化蒸気浸透試験を行い、その結果を評価したものである。このようなエビデンスの積み重ねがより有効でコスト削減できる方法の検討につながっていくと考えられる。
