環境表面汚染は、感染症を引き起こす病原体のリザーバとなる可能性がある。そのため、外因性伝播を減少させる目的で自己消毒表面が開発されている。実際の状況下での黄色ブドウ球菌（Staphyloccocus aureus）ATCC 6538 に対する作用について、乾燥接種法を用いて 5 種の異なる自己消毒表面を評価したところ、さまざまな抗菌効果が認められた。しかし、アルコールワイプを用いて消毒してしまうと、このような効果は消滅した。医療現場において自己消毒表面が消毒薬に曝露されないことを保証するのは不可能であるため、病院用消毒薬の存在下においても自己消毒表面が安定であるよう、さらなる開発が必要である。

監訳者コメント：
現在、様々な自己消毒表面が開発されているが、特に清掃後や消毒薬使用後といった状況で、それが安定的に抗菌作用を示すかどうかは不明である。本研究では調査した 5 種類のうち、長時間作用が持続したのは 1 種類であった。被検菌が S. aureus のみである、方法が中和剤を含まないRODAC プレート法であったという限界はあるものの、今後の検討と改良・開発につながる重要な情報といえる。
