レジオネラ症は、入院での深刻な合併症の一つである。病院環境中のレジオネラ・ニューモフィラ（Legionella pneumophila）がこの感染の原因なのかどうかを速やかに判定することは、さらなる感染を回避するためにきわめて重要である。本研究では、病院感染レジオネラ症における感染源を特定する目的での全ゲノムシークエンシングの使用を検討した。系統発生解析により、患者由来分離株 1 株と病院用水中の 1 株とに密接な関連が示され、院内感染の疑いが確認された。全ゲノムシークエンシングは、病院感染レジオネラ症の調査において有用なツールになりうることが明らかになった。

監訳者コメント：
医療機関内で発症したレジオネラ症の原因株が、医療機関の環境由来であるとする報告が、近年増加しつつある。最近は全ゲノムシークエンスで得られた塩基配列の高度の一致をその証拠とし、MLST 法などの従来法にまさる点も含め、評価されている。本検討はさらに、遺伝子の経時的変化など、環境株の全ゲノムシークエンスを施行する際の重要な留意点について触れており、今後の全ゲノムシークエンスの応用上、有用な報告といえる。
