Can intersectional innovations reduce hospital infection?

医療関連感染の予防はたいてい予防可能であるが、患者の安全が損なわれることの臨床的および経済的影響を考えると、依然として国際的な優先課題である。病院感染の予防は、過去数十年間に重要な進歩を遂げているが、手指衛生率をどのようにして一貫して改善させるか、カテーテル関連尿路感染などのデバイス関連合併症をどのようにしてさらに減少させるかなど、まだ困難な問題が残っている。直接的なイノベーションすなわち科学的進歩の持続的基盤である緩やかな変化、のみに頼るよりも、おそらく「横断的なイノベーション」を探し求めるべきである。これは、しばしば大きく異なる規律が交わることにより画期的な発見が生じることを表す。感染予防の取り組みに大きく影響する可能性のある交差的イノベーションは、人間工学、社会学、五感の動員などである。実際、今回のレクチャーの名称の元となった Edward Joseph Lister Lowbury 教授は一流の細菌学者であり詩人であり、彼自身の人生において横断的思考を実証した。従来の生物医科学以外のアプローチを導入することにより、患者が期待する、受ける価値のある安全な治療を、我々は患者に提供できると希望を持てるかもしれない。
