ウイルス濃度の初期値が既知であるインフルエンザウイルス（A/Udorn/307/72 H3N2）のエアロゾルを、制御下にある実験チャンバー内で Collison 噴霧器を用いて発生させた。種々の懸濁時間後に採取した空気サンプルを、プラーク計数と PCR 法により定量的に検査し、生残ウイルスの割合を検出可能ウイルス RNA 量と比較した。これらの実験により、インフルエンザウイルスの RNA コピー数はよく保たれていたが、生残ウイルス量は 10⁴ ～ 10⁵ の単位で減少したことが示された。このことから、感染制御リスクの評価のためにインフルエンザウイルスの RNA の検出のみを行う空気サンプリングによる研究は、感染性を有する生残ウイルス量を大幅に過剰評価するものと考えられる。
