便中の腸管病原体の検出に、日常的な検査として遺伝子検査が用いられるケースはこれまで少なかった。しかしながら、従来法は感度や手間、費用などの点で制約が大きかったのも事実である。本稿は、PCR 法を用いる長所、ピットフォール、結果の解釈、コスト比較など、実用化と感染対策への応用に向けた課題について述べている。
