感染性微生物は様々な経路で伝播し、一部の微生物は複数の経路で伝播し得る。飛沫感染や空気感染が通常の伝播経路である微生物に対して、また「エアロゾルが発生する手技」の最中などに浮遊粒子が人為的に生じた場合には、呼吸器および顔面を保護する必要がある。顔面および呼吸器の様々なレベルの保護機能を有する種々の個人防護具が入手可能である。最近の重症急性呼吸器症候群（SARS）およびパンデミックインフルエンザ（H1N1）2009 の経験から、医療従事者は自分が置かれた臨床的状況で、どのようなタイプの顔面および呼吸器の保護が適切であるかを選択することが困難であると考えられることが判明した。この問題に取り組むため、Healthcare Infection Society の Scientific Development Committee はガイダンス策定のための暫定作業部会を設置した。このガイダンスは、個別に発表された文献のレビューおよび専門家の合意に基づくものである。
