感染性微生物は様々な経路で伝播し得る。伝播経路は病原体によって異なり、血液媒介感染、飛沫感染、空気感染、および接触感染などがある。一部の微生物は複数の経路で伝播する。通常の伝播経路が飛沫感染や空気感染である微生物に対しては、また「エアロゾルが発生する手技」の最中に浮遊粒子が生じた場合には、呼吸器および顔面を保護する必要がある。本稿は、Health Protection Scotland および Healthcare Infection Soceity が実施した、この分野の最近の文献の批評的レビューであり、医療従事者が呼吸器および顔面の防護具を使用する際のガイダンスを策定するための情報となるものである。
