メチシリン耐性黄色ブドウ球菌（meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus；MRSA）のスクリーニングと除菌によって、MRSA 感染・伝播リスクをどの程度軽減できるかについては多数の研究で評価されているが、地域的流行がみられている病院でのこの戦略の有効性には、依然として多くの不明点がある。メチシリン感性黄色ブドウ球菌（meticillin-susceptible S. aureus；MSSA）の場合は、その目標は感染リスクを低下させるために菌の根絶を図るということに尽きる。近年、MSSA 除菌は高リスクの清潔手術に有効であることが明らかにされているが、これは費用対効果が高く、医療費の節減につながる介入である。解明されていない多くの問題点として、迅速スクリーニング検査の意義、至適な除菌レジメン、リスクの高いその他の状況での除菌の適応、除菌によって黄色ブドウ球菌感染症がその他の微生物による感染症に置き換わるリスク、およびムピロシン耐性の出現リスクなどが挙げられる。
