病室表面の Staphylococcus 属菌集団の分布を、四級アンモニウム製剤による日常的な消毒の前後に評価した。9 種類の表面からのスワブの細菌を増菌培養し、抽出した DNA を Staphylococcus 属菌用の変性剤濃度勾配ゲル電気泳動法により分析した。表皮ブドウ球菌（Staphylococcus epidermidis）/スタフィロコッカス・クルーシイ（Staphylococcus kloosii）の遺伝子マーカーは消毒の前後で全種類の表面から検出されたのに対して、黄色ブドウ球菌（Staphylococcus aureus）およびスタフィロコッカス・ルグドゥネンシス（Staphylococcus lugdunensis）のマーカーは 5 種類の表面からのみ検出された。全体として、ヒトの保菌・感染が知られている数種類のブドウ球菌の遺伝子マーカーは、日常的な消毒後の室内表面に普遍的に残存していた。
