手術部位感染（SSI）は、依然として医療提供システムの負荷であるとともに、医療介入による合併症といえる SSI 関連疾患、さらには死亡の被害を受ける患者の負荷となっている。SSI サーベイランスは多くの場合、施設における感染予防・制御活動の必須の構成要素であるが、確立された手法に従って退院後サーベイランスが実施されていないと、そのデータは不正確にして誤解のもととなる可能性がある。確立された定義が使用されないこと、症例検出方法が不統一であること、および追跡調査が不完全であることが重なると、サーベイランスから得られた結果は、安全に関する誤った感覚をもたらしたり、逆に不要な不安を助長したりすることになる。ベンチマーキングに適切であることを標榜する全国サーベイランスプログラムのデータは、多くの場合、適切にデザインされた研究が発表した感染率とは一致せず、その理由を調査する必要がある。ベンチマーキングを真に望ましいものとし、また臨床医らがそのデータに信頼を寄せるようにするには、サーベイランス参加施設が定義、退院後の症例検出方法、および確立された追跡調査方法に関する一貫したアプローチを採用できるようにサーベイランスプログラムが取り計らうべきであり、これによって、あらゆる機会を利用してデータの回収率の最大化を図り、妥当性を強化することが可能となるようにする必要がある。

英国では、2008 年に「Surgical site infection: prevention and treatment of surgical site infection」という SSI のガイドラインが英国国立医療技術評価機構（National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, UK）から発表された。次の論文で質問票調査による英国の SSI の現状と、このガイドラインに沿った全国サーベイランスデータの解離について検討している。
