クロストリジウム・ディフィシル（Clostridium difficile）感染症（CDI）は、最も重要な細菌性の病院感染下痢症の原因である。イングランドおよび北アイルランドでは、2007 年のピーク以後は CDI 関連死の報告は減少しているが、CDI は依然として疾患および死亡の主要な原因である。英国健康保護局の Clostridium difficile Ribotyping Network（CDRN）は、CDI 症例の至適な管理に有用な情報を提供することを目的として設立された。本研究では、重度の疾患を引き起こす可能性がある菌株によるアウトブレイクを検出するためのリボタイピング法の有用性を評価した。

Clostridium difficile は、しばしばパルスフィールド・ゲル電気泳動法で型別が不能になることもあり、迅速性の観点からも疫学調査のための変法が望まれる。今後もさらなる検討が必要である。
