著者らは、慢性疼痛の在宅療法に使用する経皮的電力トランスデューサを開発した。この器材は使用のたびに高水準消毒が必要である。高水準消毒のために沸騰水が有用であるかどうかを評価するため、皮膚病原菌になり得ると考えられる菌（黄色ブドウ球菌［Staphylococcus aureus］、マイコバクテリウム・テラエ［Mycobacterium terrae］、緑膿菌［Pseudomonas aeruginosa］、カンジダ・アルビカンス［Candida albicans］）をトランスデューサのパッドに接種した後、これらのパッドを標高 4,200 フィート地点で沸騰させた水（95℃）に完全に浸漬した。浸漬 10 分による log₁₀ コロニー形成単位（cfu）の減少量は、黄色ブドウ球菌 7.1、緑膿菌 ＞ 6.3、C. albicans ＞ 5.5であったが、M. terrae は 4.6 のみであった。浸漬 15 分による減少量は、それぞれ 7.5、＞ 6.8、＞ 6.6、および ＞ 7.5 cfu に増加した。

監訳者コメント：
担体として臨床で使用している器具そのものを利用した実験系である。煮沸消毒を在宅で行うことの危険性（沸騰によるやけどや火事など）を考慮するとあまり意味ある研究とはいえない。
