2009 年 6 月、ドイツのフライブルク近郊でシンポジウムが開催された。欧州各国から 29 名の出席者が参加し、その多くは研究および病院感染の予防・制御に積極的にかかわっていた。発表・議論されたトピックスは下記のとおりであった。「多剤耐性微生物の制御のための隔離とスクリーニング」、「医療関連感染に対する環境の影響」、「感染制御のための新たな技術：エビデンスの現状」、「医療関連感染のサーベイランス」、「感染制御と医療関連感染制御のための方法論的課題と優先的研究事項」、「欧州統合により相互に学んだこと」。本稿では、議論の主な論点と、代表者間で合意したいくつかのコンセンサスについて概説する。
