本研究の目的は、中国・安陽で実施されている食道癌の主要なリスク因子としてのヒトパピローマウイルス（HPV）についてのコホート研究における内部精度管理方法の有効性を評価することである。サンプル採取対象の器具上の14か所から得た環境・器具スワブおよび模擬的サンプルの合計2,395の精度管理評価用サンプルを用いて、ヒトβ-グロビンおよびHPVのDNAの検出を行った。ヒトβ-グロビンDNAはサンプルの3.88％に認められたが、HPV DNAは検出されなかった。著者らが実施中のコホート研究での厳格な精度管理下でのサンプル採取・処理においては、HPV DNA汚染のエビデンスはみられなかった。本研究の結果から、使い捨て器具の使用、厳格な環境洗浄、および再利用可能な器具の高水準滅菌が、汚染予防に重要であることが示された。
