カテーテル関連感染の診断には、一般的に中心静脈カテーテル(CVC)先端部および血液の培養が用いられている。この方法では、CVC先端部以外の部位への細菌定着の有無を確認することができない。細菌定着の程度を評価するために、集中治療室入室患者からのカテーテル10本を精査した。CVCの複数部位(ハブ、留置部、および非留置部)の内腔から採取したスワブを培養し、走査型電子顕微鏡でカテーテル内腔面を観察した。カテーテル10本中5本(50%)から細菌が検出され、細菌汚染が多く認められたのはハブの部位であった。使用済みCVC内腔面に、細菌定着やバイオフィルムとは異なる沈着(結晶化)が観察された。走査型電子顕微鏡により、沈着部には強固に定着した細菌が確認された。送液システムを用いた実験から、沈着が生じる可能性は、完全静脈栄養液などへの曝露後のほうが蒸留水への曝露後よりも高いことが示された。このような沈着が認められたCVCへの定着細菌数は、沈着がないCVCの30倍であった。
