感染症の伝播リスクを減少させるには、感染性の強い感染症（HID）の患者を適切な医療設備を備えた病室に隔離することが不可欠である。欧州委員会が協同出資し、欧州連合加盟16か国が参加するプロジェクトである欧州感染症ネットワーク（European Network for Infectious Diseases；EUNID）は、高レベル隔離室（HIR；前室のある陰圧室）の収容能力の調査を実施した。参加各国合計で、少なくとも211病院にHIRが存在し、1,789病床以上が利用できる。この数値の妥当性は不明であり、その時点の状況で異なると考えられる。散発性のHID症例は、利用可能なHIRで管理できる。また、HIRはインフルエンザパンデミックの初期にも役割を担うと考えられる。しかし、自然発生の、またはバイオテロ攻撃による大規模なアウトブレイクの際は、HIR以外の医療施設も視野に入れた制御策が必要であろう。

監訳者コメント：
ヨーロッパ諸国はアフリカ等とも近く、人的交流も深いために感染性の高い感染症に対する対策の意識が高いかもしれない。米国の総合病院の7割には空気感隔離室がある。我が国でも国策的に施設整備を図る必要があろう。
