Are hospitals too clean to trigger good hand hygiene?

医療施設における手指衛生遵守率は全般的に低い。この研究の目的は、病院内外におけるトイレ使用後の手指衛生遵守率を調査することである。病院・検査室職員、2007 年度欧州臨床微生物学・感染症会議（European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases；ECCMID）参加者、および公衆トイレ利用者を対象として観察を行った。トイレ使用後の手指衛生遵守率は、病院職員46％、会議参加者84％、公衆トイレ利用者75％であった。医療従事者は医療施設の内外で異なる手指衛生行動を示した。おそらく、公衆トイレなどの「瘴気が漂う」環境にいるという気分が、より良好な手指衛生のトリガーとなるのに対し、相対的に清潔な病院環境では手指衛生のトリガーが抑制されている可能性がある。

そうはおっしゃられましても、どうすればよろしいのでしょうか？
病院とは、高密度に患者を集めて抗菌薬を多く使用する場所であり、病院環境には耐性菌が多いという認識が必須であるが、やはり実感できないとヒトは対応できないのかもしれない。「もやしもん」みたいに、病原体が見える、というような特殊能力が必要かも。
