院内感染予防および医療費削減の可能性に対する関心が高まっている。この総説の目的は、手術部位感染症（SSI）に関する最近の研究を対象として、コストの算出方法およびSSIによるコストを比較することである。レビューした研究では、研究デザインおよびコスト算出方法に大きなばらつきがあった。しかし、平均するとSSI患者の医療費は非SSI患者の医療費の約2倍であった。

監訳者コメント：
わが国でも、国民からは医療費削減を求める声があり、一方、これまでの出来高払い制度からDPCのような包括診療支払い制度へ医療制度を移行しようとしている背景もあって、医療関連感染症によるコストはさらに注目されることとなる。一般的には包括診療制度の下では医療関連感染症などのコストは病院経営を圧迫する結果となり、感染防止対策にも一定の費用を投資する必要があると考えなければならない。安全はタダ（無料）ではない。
