Brushes and picks used on nails during the surgical scrub to reduce bacteria: a randomised trial

手術時手洗いにおいて、現在はブラシは手および前腕に対して使用されていないが、爪にはまだ広く使用されている。本研究の目的は、爪ピックおよび爪ブラシが、手術時手洗いの汚染除去効果改善に有効であるかを検討することである。手術部門のスタッフ164名を、以下の3種類の手術時手洗いプロトコール、すなわちクロルヘキシジン単独、クロルヘキシジン＋爪ピック、クロルヘキシジン＋爪ブラシのいずれかに無作為に割り付けた。手洗いの前および1時間後にグローブジュース法変法により手指の細菌を採取した。3つの介入群の細菌数に統計学的有意差は認められなかった。手術時手洗いで爪ブラシや爪ピックを使用しても細菌数は減少せず、両方とも不要である。

監訳者コメント：
手術時手洗いに関して、爪の処理に限局した検討である。爪を過度に処理すると創面になりかねない。しかし、従来のようにブラッシングしないで大丈夫なのか、という素朴な疑問に回答を導き出している。
