130年前、英国アバディーンの外科医であるアレクサンダー・オグストン（Alexander Ogston）は、膿瘍由来の膿の中に初めて微生物を発見し、後年、「ブドウ球菌（staphylococci）」と命名した。オグストンはアバディーンに「リスター法（Listerism）^※」を導入していたが、感染の原因についてさらに知りたいと望んでいた。一連の精巧な器具を用いて「動物の外傷性感染」に関するコッホの業績をヒトへと拡張した。膿瘍由来の膿を研究するために最新のドイツ製の顕微鏡とコッホの染色法を使用し、人工培養（鶏の卵）でブドウ球菌を初めて増殖させた。1878年から1883年の間、オグストンの庭の研究室が、英国の重要な細菌学研究所であった。最終的に、オグストンは外科学の欽定講座担当教授（Regius Professor）になり、「他者に研究を任せ」なければならなかった。
