医療施設内の感染伝播は患者および医療従事者にとって重大な脅威であり、その最も有効な予防法の1つは適切な手指衛生である。カナダ・オンタリオ州にあるトロント・リハビリテーション研究所の研究チームは、手洗いの頻度の増加を目的として、モニタリング機能を有する装着式手指衛生システムを開発した。今回の大規模試験は、手洗いのモニタリング機能と注意喚起機能を有する電子手指衛生機器が手指消毒のコンプライアンスを上昇させるという仮説に基づいており、本稿ではその第一期の知見を報告する。第一期の試験では、臨床現場における装着式電子手指洗浄機器の受容性と使い勝手に焦点を当てた。最初の試作品に対する医療従事者のフィードバックにより、研究チームはこの技術開発を継続すべきであるとするエビデンスを得た。

手指衛生の遵守率向上は感染対策にとって永遠の課題ですが、新しいテクノロジーを応用した管理方法というのは興味深いところです。テクノロジーの進歩により社会が引き摺られるのではなく、進むべき未来のために役立つテクノロジーの革新であってほしいと思います。
