学生を含む医療従事者全員に、携帯電話の使用パターンとケアに関する自記式質問票への記入を依頼した。参加者の携帯電話の微生物培養を実施した。これとは別に、携帯電話の影響を受けやすい医療機器に近接して業務を行う医療従事者を対象として、携帯電話による有害な現象について調査した。また電話交換手に、種々の方法で医療従事者に連絡を試みた場合の所要時間の調査を依頼した。医療従事者および調査時点で学生であった266名のうち116名が質問票の全項目に記入した(回答率44%)。ほぼ全員(98%)が携帯電話を使用しており、67%が病院関連業務に、47%が患者のケア中に携帯電話を使用していると報告があった。使用後に手を洗うと回答したのは3%のみであり、53%が携帯電話を洗浄したことがないと回答した。携帯電話101台の微生物培養の結果、45%が培養陽性となり、15%でグラム陰性菌が認められた。携帯電話の影響を受けやすい機器に近接して業務を行う医療従事者に対する調査では、救命装置の軽度の障害が1件報告されたのみであった。電話交換手が医療従事者に2分以内に連絡をとることが最も容易にできたのは携帯電話であった。携帯電話は医療従事者に広く使用されており、多くの参加者が最も効率的な連絡手段であると考えていた。しかし、携帯電話の洗浄が低いことは微生物汚染のリスクと関連している。病院は、携帯電話の衛生に関する指針を策定する必要がある。

監訳者コメント:
実に視野の狭い、ミクロ的視点で語られた研究である。たとえグラム陰性菌で汚染されたモバイルを使用しても、とにかく患者へコンタクトする前後で手指衛生を行っていれば、まったく問題は起きないはずである。それなら、我々の衣類にいる微生物は、モバイル上にいる菌数よりきっと多いでしょうけれども、これはリスクとはならないのでしょうか?
