フランスでは20年前から医療関連感染対策への関心が高まり、保健省（Ministry of Health）が中心となった国家的なプログラムと大規模調査が実施されており、2005年からは病院における医療関連感染対策チームの活動、外科手術部位感染症サーベイランス、手指消毒薬の消費量、MRSA陽性率、抗菌薬使用量を指標の5項目が指標となって、医療関連感染症とMRSAの減少を達成していることが報告されている。
医療関連感染対策は患者安全の重要な課題であり、国家行政による政策的な介入が有効な場合があることが示されている。
