病院のベッドは様々な部品で構成されており、これらを適切に汚染除去しなければ、患者の感染リスクとなる可能性がある。メチシリン耐性黄色ブドウ球菌、バンコマイシン耐性腸球菌、アシネトバクター（Acinetobacter）属、およびその他の病原体のアウトブレイクや実験的研究については、多くの論文で述べられている。アウトブレイクの調査では、患者に直接接触するマットレスや枕などのより重要な感染源と考えられる部位ではなく、ベッドの横板のみから試料を採取していることが多い。これらの物やベッドの他の部品を適切に汚染除去して交差感染のリスクの最小化を図ることは不可欠であるが、そのための詳細な勧告は報告書や公式文書には記載されていないことが多い。ベッドの各部品の汚染除去法を具体的に述べた明確なガイドラインを作成すべきである。アウトブレイク時の調査では、アウトブレイク管理の重要な一環として、マットレスおよび枕の汚染の評価を行うべきである。

ベッドまわりの衛生管理の必要性に関して論じている。高頻度接触環境表面であることから、ベッドまわりは適正な衛生管理を実施する必要がある。
