2001年に発表されたフランスの勧告を受けて、グルタルアルデヒドは再利用可能な医療器材の消毒に使用されなくなり、代わりに過酢酸系溶液のような非固定消毒薬の使用が支持されるようになった。代替消毒薬の固定特性に関する公表データは依然として一貫していない。緑膿菌（Pseudomonas aeruginosa）の液体培養液で汚染させたポリテトラフルオロエチレンチューブに対する、過酢酸液2種（活性剤ありとなし）、グルタルアルデヒド、オルソフタルアルデヒド、およびサクシンジアルデヒドの5種類の異なる消毒液による反復処理の効果を比較した。ポリテトラフルオロエチレンチューブの2％グルタルアルデヒドによる反復処理は、過酢酸系消毒薬と比較して、蛋白質の高レベルの蓄積および/または固定を引き起こした。一方、過酢酸系消毒薬では蛋白質の蓄積および/または固定は低レベルであり、それぞれの組成によってばらつきがあった。
