Healthcare-associated rotavirus gastroenteritis in a large paediatric hospital in the UK

ロタウイルスは乳児および幼児の市中感染胃腸炎の主要な原因である。しかし、医療関連感染症としての小児胃腸炎におけるロタウイルスの重要性は、ほとんど理解されていない。英国リバプールにある国民保健サービストラスト・ロイヤルリバプール小児病院（Royal Liverpool Children’s NHS Trust）で前向き研究を実施した。2006年1月から5月に入院した急性胃腸炎の患児243例を登録した。酵素免疫測定法により糞便試料中のロタウイルスを検査した。医療関連急性胃腸炎91例中の17例（19％）、市中感染急性胃腸炎152例中の54例（36％）がこのウイルスによった。医療関連急性ロタウイルス胃腸炎の患児の16例が感染源隔離を必要として、8例では経静脈的輸液管理が実施された。ロタウイルスは大規模な小児病院の医療関連急性胃腸炎でも重要な原因であると結論する。ロタウイルスワクチンは大規模な小児病院における症候性ロタウイルス感染症の多くを予防できる公衆衛生上の手段である可能性がある。

一般的に下痢症の感染対策は難しく、クロストリジウム・ディフィシル（Clostridium difficile）やノロウイルスが問題となるが、小児診療領域においてはロタウイルスにも注意が必要である。ま、当たり前か。
