ホテル室内、定期クルーズ船の船室、およびオフィス内の様々な場所で、オゾンガスによる乾燥試料中のノロウイルスおよびノロウイルスの動物代用となるネコカリシウイルス(FCV)の不活性化能を評価した。ノロウイルスは定量逆転写リアルタイムPCR(QRT-PCR)法により測定し、またFCVはQRT-PCRとウイルス感染試験を組み合わせて測定した。オゾン曝露の最適な状況において合計1時間以内の操作時間により、感染性FCVの濃度を103倍以上減少させることができ、検出限界以下となる例もあった。QRT-PCR法による測定でも、いずれのウイルスRNAも同様に減少した。硬い表面(プラスティック、スチール、ガラス)でも柔らかい表面(布地、綿、カーペットなど)でも、乾燥させたウイルス含有試料は操作によって同様の影響を受けた。これらの結果は、ホテル室内、クルーズ船の船室、および医療施設などの環境において、持ち運び可能な市販の発生装置によるオゾンガスへの曝露により、ノロウイルスを不活性化可能であることを示している。
