3例の重篤な眼感染症[眼内炎2例、眼窩蜂巣炎1例(2例は黄色ブドウ球菌、1例はビリダンス連鎖球菌群が原因)]が、手術(白内障2例、網膜剥離修復1例)2週間以内の短期間で発症した。同時期に手術室に隣接して建設工事が行われており、水平面上で微細な粉塵が検出された。以降の手術は中止されたが、建設工事が終了し、手術室を清掃して手術を再開した後は、感染はみられなかった。眼内炎の病因に関与する可能性がある因子の調査後、これらの症例の感染のメカニズムは、しばしば手術中に眼房水で発見される少数の細菌の病原性を高める、異物の存在による可能性があると提唱されている。この仮説は、眼内炎の実験モデルで検証することが可能である。
