本研究は、グラム陰性桿菌による菌血症の集中治療室入室患者37例を対象とした。グラム陰性菌菌血症の感染源、原因菌、および死亡率は、過去の調査結果と一致していた。抗生物質投与が無効となる原因で最も多いものは、抗菌薬耐性を示す傾向が強いことが報告されている菌種における抗生物質耐性の発現であった。本研究により、抗菌薬選択にあたっては抗生物質耐性が重要であること、および Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation（APACHE）のスコアが患者の死亡予測に検出力を発揮することが明らかとなった。

監訳者コメント：
数十年前の文献と比較して、集中治療室におけるグラム陰性桿菌による菌血症の疫学に変化がないという興味深い結果が得られた。抗菌薬が開発される一方、細菌の耐性化も進行し結果として死亡率が変わらないという結果は、すべての院内感染に共通していえる問題であろう。
