背景
流しの排水管は、流水によって引き起こされる病原体のエアロゾル化や跳ね返りのために、医療現場において、微生物によるコンタミネーションの重要な源となる可能性がある。
目的
汚水槽内の病原体の増殖を、病原体が浮遊性であるかバイオフィルム内にいるかにかかわらず抑制できるオゾンの新規の生成法を使った排水管のオゾン消毒の方法を説明すること。
方法と結果
殺菌性の高いオゾンは、排水トラップと携帯用低温プラズマ装置の間に密閉された環境空気を使い、排水管内のその場で発生させた。装置の安全機構で、操作者がオゾンに曝されないようにした。その後に回収された細菌によって、バイオバーデンが、排水管自体のバイオフィルムでは約 5 log10、流しにあったバイオフィルムでは 6 log10 減少したことが示された。
結論
プラズマで発生させたオゾンは、定期的に湿るが、そうでなければ到達可能ではない配管や排水管のバイオバーデンを制御できる安全で効果的な方法である。
研究の重要性と影響
ここで説明した携帯用オゾン消毒システムは、病原体が排水管から漏れてくるのを制御できる可能性を示した。従来の液体を使った消毒法と比べて、携帯用オゾン消毒システムは、次のような強みがある。(a)気体の殺生物剤は、向きや表面張力による制限を受けずに、処置の対象の内側の全表面に到達できる。(b)オゾンは、浮遊性の細菌数の減少にもバイオフィルムの細菌数の減少にも効果がある。(c)オゾンは、使用する場所で、空気から最小限の電力を使って発生させ、化学的な送達や保存は必要ではなく、毒性の残留物も発生しない。
