背景

手指の水蒸気が、手指から表面に微生物の伝播を増加させる可能性があり、またその逆もいえるので、手指乾燥は適切な手指衛生における重要なステップとして近年注目されている。

目的

手指乾燥後の細菌およびウイルスのエアロゾル化について理解すること、ならびに種々の方法による乾燥後の手指から表面への微生物の伝播を調査すること。

方法

5 人構成のボランティア群を対象に、石けんで手指の予備洗浄、すすぎ、乾燥を行ってもらい、その後、シュードモナス・フルオレッセンス(Pseudomonas fluorescens)および MS2 バクテリオファージの濃縮混合液を播種した。ボランティアは 1 人ずつ無人の洗面所に入り、手指を水ですすぐか、石けんで洗った後、ジェットドライヤーまたはペーパータオルで乾燥させた。各ボランティアは一方の手をさまざまな表面に連続的に置き、他方の手はグローブジュース法によりサンプルを採取された。洗面所の空気、表面スワブ、手指サンプルから、残存する細菌とウイルスを定量化した。

結果

試験したいずれの乾燥法においても、手指乾燥中の P. fluorescens および MS2 バクテリオファージのエアロゾル化はまれであった。いずれの乾燥法でも試験した両微生物の表面上への伝播は限定的かつ同程度であることも示された。

結論

洗面所で手指を乾燥させる場合、ジェットドライヤーまたはペーパータオル製品の使用によるエアロゾル化は低レベルである。同様に、いずれの乾燥法においても表面への伝播は少ない。新型コロナウイルス感染症(COVID-19)パンデミックは、公衆の洗面所に対して懸念を引き起こしたが、本研究では、試験したすべての方法が、洗浄した手指を乾燥させる衛生的な対策であることを明らかにした。

監訳者コメント

ヒトの手指が湿っていると病原体が伝播しやすいことを、実験医学的な観点から証明したものである。手指の乾燥中の P. fluorescens および MS2 バクテリオファージのエアロゾル化はまれであったと述べている。
